National Institute for Trial Advocacy Impacts Chinese Advocacy

       From: www.nita.org Press Release. 2007-04-25

Louisville, Colorado (April 25, 2007)Seven lawyers from China attended NITA’s recent Advocacy Teacher Training program in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a result of special international scholarships coordinated by the NITA Foundation and the Ford Foundation in Beijing, China.

From March 30 through April 1, 37 participants—including the seven special guests from China—participated in the intensive workshops that focused specifically on critique and teaching the NITA learning-by-doing methodology.

NITA program director Marcia Levy and NITA trustee Barbara Bergman both have taught trial advocacy trainings in China through an organization called China Development, which is supported by the Ford Foundation. As a result of their work there, China Development and NITA worked together to enable the attorneys from China to attend the program in Cambridge.

My evaluation on the NITA training in Harvard was ‘brief in time, heavy in task, specific in method, and. . . unforgettable,” said Xu Xiaoping a sole practitioner out of Shaanxi, China, who attended the program. “I sincerely hope that the Ford Foundation and American lawyers [continue to] spread the fairness and justice of law all over the world.

Levy worked closely with Advocacy Teacher Training program directors, William J. Hunt and Michael Kelly along with program coordinator Raquel Ramos-Najera to ensure that everything from travel, to translation went smoothly for the Chinese attorneys.

“The whole experience was phenomenal to watch,” said Levy. “It was a testament to the NITA method and in particular to the participants. . . I felt honored to be a part of the program and a part of NITA showing its global commitment.”

NITA’s intent on training the Chinese attorneys is to promote advocacy training on a global scale, not just a national scale.

NITA President & CEO, Laurence M. Rose, explained that NITA is continually asked to assist international organizations in their efforts to train attorneys, and will gladly continue to support such efforts.

“In countries like China where teaching oral advocacy is just now coming to the surface, it is particularly important for NITA to have a presence,” Rose said.  “Part of NITA’s mission is to promote justice through effective and ethical advocacy and this is not limited to the borders of the United States. Our work in South Africa, Northern Ireland, and Eastern Europe has added much to the legal systems in those areas.”

 About NITA

###

The National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) is the nation’s leading provider of litigation skills training. A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization based in Louisville, Colorado, NITA pioneered its unique learn-by-doing methodology over 35 years ago and has remained the gold standard in continuing legal education ever since. With an average student/faculty ratio of 4:1 and an all-volunteer faculty drawn from a cadre of judges, law professors and practicing attorneys, attendees at NITA’s weeklong basic trial skills “boot camps” benefit immensely and experience significant improvement in their ability to advocate for their clients. NITA places a special emphasis on training lawyers who work in child advocacy, tribal law, death-penalty defense and violence against women. NITA is also the nation’s third largest publisher of legal texts, many of which are used by renowned law schools. For more information, visit www.nita.org.
